We’re back today in Portland to meet Kim Wright, the owner of Logik the Salon to chat all things hair, beauty, and fashion in Oregon and beyond.
We cover how to build a true community-first business, tips to embrace curly hair, and a lot of love for some great Portland independent businesses.
Enjoy!
Kim, tell us more about yourself
As an owner and operator, I’ve been immersed in the salon industry for 45 years. My passion for it is just as strong today as it was when I started.
I’ve always known that doing hair was my calling, for as long as I can remember. Throughout my career, I’ve been at the forefront, managing the salon and working behind the chair, helping people feel wonderful about themselves.
It takes a special talent to create and interpret what people want and need in our industry. I took the reins at Logik the Salon with just $1,500 and the existing furniture. We’ve been successfully open for 15 years now, fostering a community and providing a safe space for everyone, including being LGBTQ-friendly.
What will clients experience at Logik the Salon Portland?
I took over Logik the Salon, Portland with $1,500 from my nascent retirement fund, determined to manifest a community of stylists where authenticity is celebrated and we could make a living together.
I’ve worked hard to integrate into the community and the neighborhood, striving to create a haven for all individuals. As a queer woman-owned business, our mission is to support all of our clients. We have a particular passion for caring for curls and transforming a simple cut into a work of art with the addition of color.
Our team comprises two stylists and a barber, specializing in fades, curls, and color. At Logik, we embrace creativity, coloring outside the lines, and we pride ourselves on being real people who do real people’s hair.
What specialties does Logik the Salon offer?
We’re proud to support local artists; our salon doubles as a mini art gallery. Located in SE Portland at 50th and Division, we offer a variety of services including color treatments, cuts, fades, curly cuts, and beard services. But beyond these, what we truly offer is a safe space for our clients to transform their hair into the style they desire.
What is your number one tip for a happy, healthy hair and beauty routine?
For the curly people out there your hair is uniquely yours. When applying your product it is best when your hair is very saturated with water. This allows you to disperse your products more evenly.
What Portland hair, beauty, and fashion trends are you seeing right now?
In the salon, we’re witnessing an eclectic variety of styles, ranging from pixie cuts to super short zero fades to vivid colors. I can’t say I’ve observed any one particular fashion trend dominating the scene, as there’s so much variety in requests right now.
What hair and beauty products do you think should be in everyoneβs day-to-day routine?
We are a salon with independent contractors running their business out of Logik.
I personally love Surface as their curly products are so versatile for all textures. Mary uses AG for their natural qualities and being fragrance-free. Louie designs a lot of his own products to suit his clients.
Each product line is a choice to help give our clients the results they love and need.
Beyond Logik the Salon, who else would you like to give some love to?
There are so many small businesses out there that itβs hard just to pick a few.
Metro clothing store on Hawthorne is full of eclectic wonderful clothing. Twill clothing store has such great BoHo fashions.
ARTIFACT: CREATIVE RECYCLE is another clothing store that does resells and I always appreciate the chance to purchase second-chance clothing.
Who is your all-time hair, beauty, and style hero?
Martin Parsons did the most amazing, simplified, hairstyles and updos, and always made stylists welcome to speak with him when they needed to.
Is there anything else youβd like to share with our SalonOtter readers?
Iβd like to shout out all the small hair salons out there for making it through all the struggles that have gone on in our world of late. Hang in there weβll all make it through!
Also, I have lots of love for my team who stand with me through thick and thin… may you each find the ultimate success!
